Notice of 2024 Flood Park/Campground/Golf course Closures

As an update, due to damages sustained from the flood, Watona Park will continue to be closed to the public. The campground will remain closed for the season. The golf course may reopen in the future but for now is still closed, please check our Facebook page for updates. At the present time the entire area (park/campground/golf course) are closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic. There will be City employees and some construction companies going in and out of the park to complete repair or demolition projects over the remainder of Summer and possibly in to the early Fall . Essentially, if one cones/barricades are moved at the road closure to accommodate access for authorized personnel, this does not mean ignore the closure and go through anyway. Citations can be issued for unauthorized travel.

We will continue to update the Community as needed.

Notice of Kiddie Pool Closure

NOTICE OF KIDDIE POOL CLOSURE

The City of Madelia regrets to announce the closure of the kiddie pool due to failing mechanics and infrastructure. We realize the inconvenience of the closure, but the safety of our staff and patrons is our number one priority.

URGENT

Due to the rising flood waters, the City is being forced to shut down its lift station. Effective immediately, the city is requesting all residence limit their water usage until further notice. Avoid excess flushing of toilets, limit showers and baths, avoid running dishwashers, washing machines, or anything else that would create significant water discharge to our wastewater system. We will notify you as soon as the restrictions are lifted and the crisis has passed. We appreciate your assistance as we attempt to navigate this emergency. Thank you!

Sandbagging

Sandbagging:

Madelia residents may obtain sandbags from Total Lawn & Landscape, located at 660 Haynes Ave NE.

  • Enter on the first entrance that states employee entrance. There will be cones that will direct you to the correct bunker to fill the sand bags. It will be the homeowner’s responsibility to fill their own sand bags.
  • You must use the clipboard in the mailbox next to the bunker and record how many sandbags you take. You do not need to come into the office to get your sandbags. If you have any questions please call or text Dustin at (507) 327 0050
The City of Madelia does not provide or distribute sandbags to individual properties at risk of flooding. The prime responsibility for the prevention and protection of private property from flood damage rests solely with the owner of the property. Talk with your homeowner’s insurance agent to make sure you are covered for natural disasters before they happen.

The sand and sandbags are intended to be used to restrict flood waters from entering houses or buildings via doorways and garages and entryways. Sandbag structures DO NOT prevent water seepage through walls/foundations etc, and therefore should be built with the central purpose of diverting flood water around or away from buildings. The sandbags are not provided or intended to be used to provide a barrier around houses or property.

Depending on where the property is located, and the impact and the warning time of flooding, moving, or raising valuable items to avoid water damage may be the most practical option to protect property.

THE SANDBAGS ARE THE PROPERTY AND RESPONSIBILITY OF RESIDENTS. RESIDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO RETURN THE SANDBAGS TO THE CITY/TOTAL LAWN & LANDSCAPE, AND ARE RESPONSILBE FOR PROPER DISPOSING OF.
