Pet Licenses

All dogs and cats must be licensed within the City of Madelia each year. These licenses expire on December 31 of the second year issued and will require a renewal. A copy of current rabies vaccinations is required as well as a fee. The cost is $10.00 each if the pet is spayed or neutered; $15.00 each if not spayed or neutered. A tag will be issued upon completion of the form, payment, and proof of rabies vaccination. A link to the application is to the right.

Kennel Licenses

A kennel license must be obtained if the household has more than 4 cats, dogs, or a combination of both. An application must be filled out and approved by Madelia City Administrator and Chief  before a kennel may operate. The cost for a kennel license is $40.00. Each dog or cat must also be licensed with proof of a current rabies vaccination. A link to the application is to the right. This license expires December 31 each year and requires a renewal.

Poultry/Fowl Keeping License

A poultry/fowl keeping license must be obtained for ANY property within city limits who wishes to keep poultry/fowl. Before the application can be approved, a zoning/land use application must be completed and approved. Once the zoning/land use permit is approved, then a poultry keeping application must be filled out and approved by Madelia City Administrator and Chief  before a coop/run may operate. The cost for a poultry/fowl keeping license is $75.00 in addition to the $75.00 zoning/land use permit.

  • NO roosters or drakes are permitted.
  • No more than six (6) poultry of fowl may be kept at any one lot at any time.
  • Approved permits are good for 2 years from the date of issuance.
