The compost site is located on Joy Ave SW adjacent to the Madelia Golf Course.
The Madelia Compost site is only available for use to residents or business owners within our community only. Person(s) living outside of City limits are prohibited from using the site.
The only materials that are accepted at the compost are: trees, tree trimmings, brush, leaves, garden plants and grass clippings.
ALL OTHER MATERIAL(including garbage, lumber, concrete, cement, cardboard, windows, doors, tires, batteries, steel, and furniture) are prohibited. Violators will be fined. This is NOT a landfill.
The compost generally opens in the early Spring, weather dependent and closes for the season late fall, weather dependent.
Seasonal Hours:
We have installed security cameras at the compost site so we can better monitor what is coming in and leaving the compost. Therefore, the compost should be open most everyday until it closes for the season, weather pending.
If there is a fair amount of precipitation and the grounds are too soft, we will lock the gate until the grounds dry up enough for vehicles to drive through without creating ruts.
If the compost site is abused (violators will be fined), we will have to go back to the scheduled days and times we’ve had in the past. If that should happen. No one will be able to enter the compost unless they are a key holder and/or have visited City Hall to complete the temporary day pass application and have paid the fee.
If you are in need of access to the compost on it’s closed days (no weekends), you are an in town Madelia resident, and/or a contractor working in town, you have the option to obtain a key for temporary daily access by completing a temporary access form and paying the $25.00 fee. Please contact City Hall for more information. 507.642.3245
